When do you need to see a Periodontal Specialist?

Most people are uncomfortable when our hygienists actually ask them to demonstrate their home care routine. Think of this as “skill development”. The approach you’ve been using has allowed significant gum problems to develop now we’re going to show you how to improve your home care to avoid losing more bone ( and teeth) in the future.
At first, your chances of having your teeth comfortably for the rest of your life are 90% my responsibility. I will set up the environment where you can be successful. When I’m finished, the responsibility becomes 90% yours. Our hygienists will begin a therapy program to control your gum disease. Depending on the severity of the bone loss, Dr. Hamal is available to treat specific teeth that do not respond to therapy or to provide dental implants for missing teeth.

What is Periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is often silent, meaning symptoms may not appear until an advanced stage of the disease. However, warning signs of periodontal gum disease include the following:
- Red, swollen or tender gums or other pain in your mouth
- Bleeding while brushing, flossing or eating hard food
- Gums that are receding (pulling away from the teeth), causing the teeth to look longer than before
- Loose or separating teeth
- Pus between your gums and teeth
- Sores in your mouth
- Persistent bad breath
- A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
- A change in the fit of partial dentures
The American Academy of Periodontology’s risk assessment test will help you see if you are at risk for having or developing periodontal gum disease.
